KPMG in the Channel Islands are pleased to announce a number of key promotions within their cross island tax team.

In Jersey, we are very pleased to welcome Paul Eastwood to the team, who joins us as a Director. Having previously led a Big 4 tax practice in Jersey, Paul had until recently been working as the Deputy Comptroller in the Jersey Taxes Office.

Head of Tax for the Channel Islands John Riva commented “Paul brings a unique insight in assisting our clients in navigating the issues and challenges presented by the Economic Substance Rules introduced in both Guernsey and Jersey at the start of the year. These rules represent one of the most significant challenges to doing business in both islands and Paul’s appointment leaves us confident that we can remain at the forefront in this area both locally and internationally.”

In addition to Paul Eastwood, Jersey have promoted Chris Lowe to Associate Tax Director. Chris has led the AEOI offering in the Channel Islands for a number of years.

Mr Riva commented that his promotion is “well-earned recognition of the hard work, excellent client service and wise counsel he has and continues to provide”.

In Guernsey, Paul Beale has been promoted to Tax Director and will head up the cross island private client practice, which includes UK and international tax services to trustees, assisting real estate clients with the ever changing UK legislation and providing advice to those seeking to relocate to Guernsey.

Paul commented “I am thrilled for the opportunity and the chance to continue to grow this area of the business. We have laid excellent foundations in the past few years and have a strong team in place to meet the rapidly evolving challenges faced.”

Also, in Guernsey, Anderson Page has been promoted to Senior Manager in US tax whilst Nana Aboagye and Matthew Thomas have been promoted to Tax Manager respectively.

It was going to take more than some bad weather to dampen spirits at the RBC Race for The Kids in Jersey on Sunday 29 September.

More than 1,200 people registered to take part in the 2.5KM and 5KM fun runs, an increase of over 70% from last year’s inaugural event, with all fundraising going to Mind Jersey’s ‘Youthful Minds’ initiative. RBC Ambassador and local hero Ollie Turner, and Commonwealth gold medallist Jodie Stimpson led the runners through their warm-up and were then joined by other Super League athletes including Georgie Taylor-Brown, Igor Polyanskiy, Matthew Hauser and Matthew Sharpe who came out to cheer on the racers and take part in the event themselves.

David Bailey, Chief Operating Officer at RBC Wealth Management in Jersey said of the event: ““We were delighted to see such a fantastic turnout for this year’s Race. The Jersey community has been incredibly supportive of the event, which brings people together while raising funds for a cause which strongly aligns with RBC’s global commitment to supporting young people. Youthful Minds aims to change public attitudes and reduce stigma surrounding mental health, and we are very proud to have partnered with them.” 

When asked about the importance of Super League partnering with community-focused events such as the RBC Race for the Kids, Michael Dhulst, CEO of Super League Triathlon said: “It’s part of our DNA that we want to inspire people and that is why Super League is here. Working hand in hand with RBC to make Race for the Kids part of this weekend in Jersey is very important and has the added benefit that we can do something great for charity.”

RBC mascot, Leo the Lion, was ready at the end of the race to greet the finishers with a congratulatory high five, and all the children who took part were given their very own miniature Leo to take home as a reminder of their fantastic effort.

“Variety, the Children’s Charity of Jersey was delighted to be able to take 150 children to the Battle of Flowers funfair, thanks to James Cole and his staff, who gave of their time for free to provide exclusive access on 31st July.  The tickets were distributed to children who either had special needs or were disadvantaged, ensuring that children who might otherwise not be able to attend were guaranteed an afternoon of fun followed by a light lunch provided by Variety.  The children had a fantastic time if the squeals of delight and laughter were anything to go by!

Katrina O’Connor, Manager at Mont a l’Abbe Holiday Club said: “This is the highlight of the holiday for our children, and they really look forward to it.”

Competitors were given rare opportunity to swim in iconic Rideau Canal as six athletes secure spots for main season kick-off in Jersey

The pressure was on in Ottawa over the weekend for the third and final Super League Triathlon Qualifier event before the main season officially kicks off in Jersey on 28-29 September.

It was the last opportunity for the professional athletes (Pros) to claim one of six Golden Tickets for qualification, and the men’s and women’s racing didn’t disappoint the crowds in the Canadian capital. It was the first time that permission had been granted for competitive swimming in the iconic Rideau Canal – a truly unique experience for all the triathletes.

The Pros raced the Enduro format on Saturday before tackling Sunday’s grueling Eliminator. It was a double success for the Australians over the weekend, with Charlotte McShane and Ryan Bailie both taking the first Golden Tickets; the pair raced in Super League last season, so clearly came prepared.

New Zealand’s Nicole Van Der Kaay and Canada’s Desirae Ridenour secured the final two spots in the women’s race – a return to Super League for a second time for Ridenour. The final two places for Jersey in the men’s race were won by Canada’s Aiden Longcroft-Harris and the USA’s Michael Arishita – both novices to the innovative triathlon format.

Speaking seconds after the finish on Sunday, the men’s third and final Golden Ticket winner Michael Arishita said: “It was great – everything I could have hoped for. It’s a good feeling when the race goes as planned. I learned some lessons and just stayed confident and I was happy with the run; the key was just believing that I could do it. It feels like a dream.”

The main season kicks off on 28-29 September with RBC Super League Triathlon Jersey. The Golden Ticket winners will be put through their paces on the global stage against some of the world’s greatest triathletes.

The Oxygen Therapy Centre (OTC) has completed a move to larger premises in Trinity Hill and therapy sessions have already started again.

As part of the move, OTC have installed their new double oxygen chamber to increase capacity from 4 to 12 people being treated in each session. This is a significant increase from previous capacity and means they can offer even more sessions to keep up with demand. Requests have risen dramatically over the past few years as oxygen therapy becomes more widely understood and the new chamber isthe only low-pressure oxygen chamber in the Channel Islands.

Between 2016 and 2018, the number of completed sessions rose from 365 to 777. So far this year, the centre has already completed 370 therapies, and the increased capacity should see the final figure for the year reaching an all-time high.

The new premises come complete with improved parking facilities and additional space for private rooms to offer complimentary therapies. Most importantly, the site now belongs solely to the charity rather than being leased giving them the freedom to develop it to continue to provide services to Islanders.

The Oxygen Therapy Centre provides support and rehabilitation to people living with a wide variety of conditions including Multiple Sclerosis, Fibromyalgia, other neurological conditions, cancer and sports injuries.The charity currently helps to treat over 40 different conditions. However, statistics for Jersey show that they could be assisting a lot more considering that 14%¹of the Island’s population are defined as disabled, with a proportion of these having conditions that could benefit from oxygen therapy.

The charity still has a target figure of £200K to raise in order to complete the refurbishment of the centre as well as covering ongoing running costs. A recent generous donation of £25K was gratefully received, but they still continue to rely on the generosity and support of the people and businesses of Jersey.

‘We are thrilled to have successfully completed the move to our new premises and would like to thank all those who have been involved in this project and donated their time and/or expertise. We are already benefitting from having more space and a larger oxygen chamber which is fantastic considering the amazing results that are achieved for our clients. We still have a lot of money to raise and we would be so grateful if people would come forward to help us.’
